Richland WA Begins New Recycling Project

Tri Cities WA has always been aware of sustainable energy, and has major ties to the concepts of earth-friendly projects. Now the city of Richland WA has announced a pilot for curbside recycling.

Next week, Richland is set to begin delivering blue recycling bins and green waste containers to residents who request them- at least to 4 pilot neighborhoods: Canyon Run in south Richland, two in central Richland and one in north Richland.

Beginning May 11th, these residents will be able to recycle paper, cardboard, some plastic, aluminum and steel cans in the green and blue bins and putting them at the curb on garbage days. They are starting with the 4 neighborhoods to study whether the program would increase the cost of waste collection to residents. After the $276,000 pilot has been completed at year-end, Richland WA will decide if the pilot will be expanded city-wide.

The city has had large recycling drop boxes cited around Richland WA for years and collects about 1,600 tons a year from them. The city estimates the area’s single-family homes generates a total of about 19,000 tons of garbage a year, but about 40% of that figure dumped into the landfill could be recycled. With the cost of dumping into the landfill at about $20 per ton, there’s a chunk of change that could be saved.

The city of Richland WA estimates at the current rate of garbage collection, the landfill is expected to reach capacity by 2015. The recycling program could extend that date out, while providing an earth-friendly method of dealing with a large amount of the city’s garbage.
